On Penumbra, role players can create a character in one of nine class lines. Villagers can promote into any of these 9 class lines. Promotions occur at specific post counts rather and are listed within each tier.
Note: Mage/Cleric line are allowed to have a total of 5 spells in their repertoire. Spellthief line is allowed 4. Beginner level spells can be traded away at any time to make room for more Advanced spells, but Advanced spells are permanent and can never be traded away.
Trainee
Villager – Inexperienced men, women, and youths with great potential. Though they are unable to equip any weapons beyond basic “sword”, they can promote into any class. Use Swords.
Promote at 30 total posts.
Tier 1
Mercenary – Wielders of the sword who known for their speed and skill. Can be trained or taught in a variety of different sword styles. Use swords.
Warrior – Balanced fighters who are versatile in combat styles. Use swords.
Soldier – Well armored fighters who tend to thrive on the front lines. Use lances.
Cavalier – Mounted fighters who boast superb mobility on the battlefield. Use lances.
Pegasus Knight – Female warriors whose flying mounts offer them great combat prowess. Use lances.
Archer – Bowmen able to pick off their opponents from a long range. Use bows.
Mage – Magi who wield the arcane arts to do battle. Powerful at range, but weak in close quarters. Use Black Magic.
Spellthief – Wielders of magic who tend to fare better at close quarters combat, but lack the power of a true Mage. Use Black Magic and Swords, but are only allowed basic swords with no properties or Weapon Arts.
Cleric/Priest – Healers who utilize the arcane arts in a more indirect manner. Use White Magic.

Tier 2
Myrmidon – Mercenaries of renown, who mastered the blade. Use swords.
Hero – Valiant warriors who have picked up the bow to add to their prowess. Uses Swords and Bows.
Knight – Heavily armored soldiers who lack mobility but make up for it in durability. Use Lances.
Paladin – Experienced cavaliers who thrive in open battlefields. Use Lances.
Falco Knight – Veteran pegasus knights who boast superior combat prowess. Use Lances.
Sniper – Competent archers whose skill allows for greater accuracy at farther distances. Use Bows.
Sage – Powerful mages whose prowess now extends to White Magic as well. Use Black and White Magic.
Spellsword – Now brandishing a sword, these warriors can decimate foes both near and far. Use Black Magic and Swords.
Bishop – Clerics who can now command the elements with Black Magic. Use White and Black Magic.
Promote at 200 total posts.
Tier 3
Dread Fighter – Masters of the blade with unparalleled speed, who have developed a resistance to Black Magics. Use Swords, 1/2 dmg from Black Magic.
Vanguard – Paragons of combat who dominate the battlefield with well-rounded combat strengths. Use Swords and Bows, + 1 Weapon Skill Slot.
Barons – Fortified knights whose defenses are nigh impregnable, especially resistant to arrows. Use Lances, 1/2 dmg from Bows.
Gold Knights – Glorious knights who possess unmatched mobility. Terrifying to face in close combat. Use Lances, ½ dmg from Melee.
Seraph Knight – Knights who are able to draw out the latent magic from their mounts, allowing them to deal great damage to Terrors. Use Lances, effectiveness vs Terrors (does not stack).
Bow Knights – Snipers whose skill allows them to fire accurate shots even on horseback. Excellent mobility and range. Use Bows, horse mounted.
Archsage – Magnificent wielder of magic, whose experience grants their spells extra potency. Use Black and White Magic, bonus to spell dmg and hit.
Nightblade – Skilled with blade and magic alike, these deadly warriors use their magic to passively heal themselves. Use Black Magic and Swords, low passive regen every round of combat.
Saint – Masters of White Magic, granting them a holy(or perhaps unholy) aura to heal their allies. Use White and Black Magic, low heal to nearby allies every round of combat.
Promote at 400 total posts + Trial
Overclass (Tier 4)
Yaksha - An agent of death who is one with their blade. Only the most skilled warriors can follow their movements, and yet it rarely makes a difference. Use Swords, 1/2 dmg from Black Magic, slight effectiveness vs Human enemies.
Conqueror – A title that belonged to the one who conquered the War Father himself. As mighty as they are versatile. Use Swords and Bows, + 2 Weapon Skill Slot (allows for more power with less cost on Mastercraft Weapon).
Spartan – Unbreakable dreadnoughts who can rarely be felled by even the most powerful of weaponry. The pinnacle of martial combat in warfare. Use Lances, 1/2 dmg from Bows, free Pavise combat art.
Skogul – Riders whose mounts have ascended alongside them. Their glorious destriers are as deadly as any Beast or Terror, and have nigh unlimited stamina. Use Lances, ½ dmg from Melee, free Aegis combat art.
Harrier – Taking in ancient magic, a Seraph Knight's mount is reborn as a Falicorn, a Beast long thought to be mere myths. These mounts transfer their magic to their riders. Use Lances, effectiveness vs Terrors (does not stack), +1 Black Magic spell (player choice. No Magic class Player Skills can be taken on this class though).
Oliphantier – Mounted archers whose skill and precision are unmatched. It is said that one could even shoot the stars out of the sky with their skills. Use Bows, horse mounted, free Fated Arrow combat art.
Sorceror/Sorceress – Masters of black magic whose powers have been enhanced by ancient magic. Just one such wizard possesses the power to create or destroy on levels rarely seen outside of the realm of gods. Use Black and White Magic, bonus to spell dmg and hit, +1 to Spell List (Master Tier Spell doesn't take this slot).
Enchanter/Enchantress – With blade and spell alike these legendary warriors are the pinnacle of sheer destruction. Use Black Magic and Swords, low passive regen every round of combat, 1 free White Magic spell.
Exemplar – Annointed through faith, protected by magic, these healers are so powerful that one among them was said to be able to restore life to the deceased. Use White and Black Magic, low heal to nearby allies every round of combat, free Miracle player skill.
