Citadel
In the center of what was once a small, quaint south Valentian village now stands a massive marble tower known as the “Citadel”. It was built nearly a century after the unification of Valentia as a place of magical study, spearheaded by a family that came from a long line of extremely magically potent men and women. Since the founding of the citadel the village around it grew exponentially, eventually growing to become the second-largest city in all of south Valentia.
While aspiring and veteran mages can choose to study any path of magic they so desire, the Citadel was careful to apply some limitations. Experiments are not to be held outside of Citadel itself, for one, and many a student have been expelled for research into areas that include the Void. The council that manages the Citadel has deemed the Void far too dangerous a subject for students to study. As such some students, perhaps more ambitious or thirsty for knowledge deemed “taboo” prefer to travel to the less grandiose Archaneum to the north-east.
A major goal of Citadel, however, revolves around the concept of "wild magic" in Valentia. What happened to it after the deaths of Mila and Duma. Even if they had flushed Valentia with their own magic, the land had been very rich with natural magic before their arrival some millenia ago. The staff at Citadel want to go about finding ways for mankind to draw magic from nature as well as themselves, seeing it as a method to both make their magic stronger and thus do more with it, while also reducing the inherent risks of casting magic. This of course would require the return of wild magic, however.
Archaneum
Though not as grandiose and well-funded as Citadel, the Archaneum is glorious in its own right. It has no city surrounding it, but instead is a giant fortress that could BE its own city. With no true civilization nearby the Archaneum and those that run it have yet to see a reason to place any limitations on the studies of those who attend. In fact, the Archaneum wants to learn more about the Void. The netherealm that Terrors come from. It is believed that the Void is an endless source of magic, larger and more potent than wild magic ever was. To harness that power and understand it could fuel Valentia to new heights.
While the Citadel was founded by a long, established family of mages, the Archaneum was founded by a single man. He claimed his father had been a mage, and he had incredible talent of his own. While Citadel was being built he heard the ideals that fueled its creation and was left...wanting. So he took to north eastern Rigel, beyond the swamplands and treescapes, and took an abandoned fortress once known as “The Duma Gate” and transformed it into the free, ambitious Archaneum that is known in the modern era.
There is a sense of rivalry between students of Citadel and students of Archaneum. While mages from Citadel tend to get solid recommendations as battle mages for the One Kingdom, Archaneum mages tend to pride themselves on staying true to the very essence of magic: unlimited potential. And it isn't as though none who have studied at Archaneum have ever made it into esteemed positions in the military. In truth, regardless of which you study at or attend, limitless options are opened to you at either.
