Ages past, thousands of years before modern Valentia, Mila and Duma were denizens of Archanea, the continent that neighbors Valentia across the Eastern sea. Duma once became engaged with a heated, nearly violent dispute between himself and Naga: leader of the Divine Dragons. As a result Duma was banished from Archanea. Unable to remain on his home continent he set off for Valentia. Mila, caring for her brother, left Archanea with him. They did not come alone, with a host of various lesser dragons accompanying them.
The two dragons arrived to find Valentia a very different land from Archanea. Humanity did not struggle against or with much draconic influence, but rather from an influx of wild magic. Beasts ate plants and other creatures infused with nature’s magic, and as such were far larger, powerful, and oft times aggressive than most of Archanea’s fauna. Then there were the Terrors, creatures either given form by the magic of the Void, or outright denizens of the enigmatic territory. They too thirsted for magic in all forms, and as such were drawn to the magic that ran wild through the land, and resided within all of humanity.
While Mila took pity on the humans, Duma saw in them himself. People struggling against a greater power. Both felt the need to take action, and so Duma and his sister set about using their might, magic, and small army of dragons to tame Valentia. They drove the Beasts to what seemed to be extinction, and Terrors were purged as well, forced back into the depths of the Void from whence they had come.
Duma and Mila led the humans of Valentia into prosperity, and for many a century they led together. Valentians worshipped them as twin gods, and while neither Duma or Mila truly viewed themselves as such, they led humanity with pride. However their ideals gradually began to clash with one another. Duma wanted to push humanity’s potential, and ensure that they always strove for greater power.
Mila, however, wanted humanity to grow wanting for nothing. She wanted to see her people strive for peace, prosperity, and pleasure above all else. In time these different ideologies became irreconcilable, and the two siblings began to undermine each other in the hopes of pushing humanity towards their desired vision. What followed next was full scale war. The war raged across all of Valentia, even the host of dragons that had come to Valentia with the twins divided and at war with one another.
No dragons survived, save for Mila and Duma.
Having eradicated Valentian dragons, and bringing death to many humans, Mila and Duma both decided to cease their conflict and form a pact. Duma would take the northern half of Valentia, while Mila would take the south. The two would forge their own kingdoms and teach their ideologies to their respective kingdoms. Duma named his northern kingdom “Rigel”, while Mila named her southern kingdom “Zofia”.
With that pact came the “Divine Accord”, a sacred oath that Rigel would never invade Zofian territory and vice versa.
Duma shaped Rigel to be even harsher than the north had already been. He used his magic to keep Terrors at bay, but gave little else to his people, for he wished them to forge and develop their own strength against hard conditions. His most loyal and valiant champions became the first Royal Family of Rigel, and they ruled in his stead while he presided in his temple to the north east.
Mila crafted Zofia to be an endless bounty. The land hardly ever needed to be worked, and crops grew well regardless of rain or shine. She flushed the land with her magic and kept Terrors at bay, ensuring that Zofians could live easily and peacefully. Her most devoted followers became the first Zofian Royal Family, and Mila retreated to her Temple near the eastern sluice gate.
However, over time, Duma and Mila began to suffer from an affliction that no dragon was safe from: mental degeneration. They began to go mad, and as their minds were twisted so too were their ideals. Zofia became a land of excess, debauchery, and laziness. Rigel became a land harder than stone and twice as cold. Powerful and prideful, but there was little love to be found among the masses.
The, of course, came the War of Deliverance. Mila and Duma both met their ends through the will of the last Rigelian Emperor, Rudolf I. While he slayed Mila, his son Alm put an end to Duma, whose madness had driven him to become a Fell God.
The remains of the Divine Dragons were buried atop the tallest mountain in Zofia, which has since been renamed simply “The Sacred Mountain”. The lingering magic left in their bodies affected the nearby flora, and as such a massive, beautiful tree that is known as the “God’s Tree” has since begun to grow. Its growth is slow, but over the centuries since it sprouted it has since grown larger than any other tree in Valentia...
