Magic is ancient, pre-dating recorded history in Valentia. In years past the land of Valentia was ripe with magic, but overtly so. Animals and Terrors alike feasted on wild magic, either directly by engorging on the raw energy itself, or through eating magic rich foods from the environment. As such species and races that are now considered extinct once ran rampant.
Though mankind was always able to produce magic from within themselves, and very few humans lacked the ability to do so entirely, it cost them their own strength to cast and manipulate it. Elemental magics tended to tax one physically, overuse of, say, Fire based magic leaving burns on ones finger tips. Spiritual or Light based magics tended to tax one of their faiths and hopes, overuse leaving them feeling lost and in despair. Overuse of dark magics could go so far as to affect one's appearance, and their emotional states.
With the costs on human magic, and their inability to draw magic into themselves from the environment, they simply struggled greatly to compete with the Terrors and Beasts that were able to draw in the endless wild magic from their environment. Human colonization of Valentia was very slow.
It wasn’t until two Divine Dragons, twin siblings at that, were exiled from neighboring Archanea that humanity's circumstances changed. The dragons conquered Beast and Terrors alike, allied with Humanity, and the twins tamed the wild magic and flushed it with their own natural power.
The magic of the Divine Dragons shaped the kingdoms that they founded. Though Duma kept beasts and terrors at bay through the land, he withdrew natural magic from the land of Rigel. Zofia, however, remained lush and rich so that Mila’s Zofians could farm the land with ease, without fear of Beasts or Terrors. In time both races became mere fragments of the past, lost to history altogether.
Valentia faced a great change following the deaths of Mila of Duma. With the Divine Dragons dead, their magic no longer flowed through Valentia. Rather than the resurgence of wild magic once again, instead magic steadily became more and more sparse throughout Valentia. The ancient races and beasts of the past were still lost, and Terrors had mostly retreated to areas rich with magic from the Void, with enough wild magic to keep them satiated that they did not wander far from their lairs and dungeons…
In modern Valentia, however, natural magic seems to have vanished entirely. Only the Gods Tree atop the Sacred Mountain, overlooking Castle Valentia, continues to produce it. As such the tree is heavily defended, lest Terrors attempt to consume and corrupt the tree, for the Terrors have begun to roam further from their lairs, in numbers unseen for centuries...
